Tesla CEO Elon Musk has cautioned via Twitter that announcements at the company’s Battery Day event won’t enter ‘serious high-volume production’ until 2022. Also adding that the company will continue to buy third-party battery cells even if Tesla decides to make its own.

This simply implies that any new battery tech showcased at the Tesla Battery Day Event will be at the prototype stage. Meaning that it won’t be available in its current mass-market vehicles like the Model 3 or Model Y.

Musk blames the ‘extreme difficulty’ in scaling new technology as the reason for its immediate lack of availability. The CEO noted that making the machine that makes the machine is vastly harder than the machine itself.

The CEO also tweeted Tesla’s intention of buying more battery cells. “We intend to increase, not reduce battery cell purchases from Panasonic, LG & CATL (possibly other partners too). However, even with our cell suppliers going at maximum speed, we still foresee significant shortages in 2022 & beyond unless we also take action ourselves,” Musk tweeted.

Reports are rife that Tesla could announce new battery technology that holds a higher capacity than third-party cells. A higher capacity would also help it produce its vehicles at a lower cost. There have also been mentions of a “million-mile” battery, which will help Tesla to lower the cost of its cars and make the vehicles last longer.
