Microsoft AR Hololens googles are not a hit with the US Army

Internal leaks reveal that the augmented reality Hololens goggles, designed by Microsoft, are not getting positive reviews from its intended customer, the United States Army.

As reported by Bloomberg, the military evaluations for the headsets, which it calls Integrated Visual Augmentation System or IVAS, show that there is still much for Microsoft to work on. From physical impairments to headaches, nausea, and eyestrain, the goggles are causing more problems than they are solving.

Typically, Microsoft Hololens is designed to feed soldiers live info on navigation and commands through a head-up display. It also offers thermal and night-vision features. In addition, professionals and hobbyists can use the headset for various activities.

However, its major backer was supposed to be the US military, which had billions of dollars worth of supply lined up for the computer company if its gadgets met its criteria. The latest report shows that it has not done so, and earlier in 2022, a Senate committee slashed a military procurement request to buy more headset units from Microsoft by up to $350.

“The emerging results indicate that the program achieved success in most of the Army evaluation criteria,” Brigadier General Christopher D. Schneider said in a statement to Insider. “However, the results also identified areas where IVAS fell short and needs additional improvements, which the Army will address.”

Schneider’s statement seems to be milder than reality, as one tester said that the gadgets could have gotten soldiers killed in their current condition.
