Google is testing passkey feature for Chrome and Android

Google announced that it is testing a passkey login feature for Android and Chrome users as it gets ready for a passwordless future.

The idea behind passkey is that your device is fitted with an authentication feature that works with major operating software makes like Apple (iOS and MacOS), Google (Android), and Microsoft (Windows). These passkeys will be able to confirm device credentials to a website or an app that you are using.

It is safer than passwords because, once you confirm your credentials to your device, it will do the rest, subsequently for other platforms. Unlike passwords, which can be stolen. It also saves you from the risk of repeating easy-to-remember passwords, trying to create new ones all the time, or giving it up to phishing attempts.

Passkey is being touted as the next level of security and convenience as it will combine the features of two-factor authentication and ease. To compromise you, a bad actor will need physical access to your device, or hack the website itself.

The feature is set to launch later this year, beginning with support for limited websites and apps. For now, developers are building support for passkeys using the WebAuthn API and testing on the Chrome Canary browser or the Google Play Services beta program, The Verge says.

While your device will hold your passkey, it would also be backed up on the cloud as well, in case you lose your device. In addition to its security and ease-of-use offering, the feature also represents the next step in cross-platform compatibility.
