Microsoft announced an update on its enforcement guidelines on Forza Horizon or Forza Motorsport game to have a zero-tolerance policy for any player using the confederate flag or other symbols that represent “notorious iconography”.

Nazi imagery and the rising sun, as it can be a symbol of Japanese imperialism, will also be banned. The corporation posted the update via its Forza support twitter handle.

“Our goal is to create a safe, secure, and enjoyable experience for all players. Moving forward, the use of the Confederate flag on any car and under any circumstances will be noted as notorious iconography in our enforcement guidelines and its use will result in a ban,” the post read.

Players on the Microsoft owned Forza Horizon have the freedom to customise their vehicles to some extent. Players use this feature to recreate “the General Lee”. The General Lee is a 1969 Dodge Charger from The Dukes of Hazzard and has been recreated in almost every Forza game since 2007 in the least.

However, the General Lee controversially includes a confederate flag on its back. With the new update, Microsoft will ban players who use that symbol in Forza Horizon.

And honestly, players do not need a confederate flag to turn their 1969 Dodge Charger into a General Lee. The real-life General Lee car even no longer has the confederate flag. Its owner and pro golfer, Bubba Watson, says he removed them in 2015.

NASCAR has also towed a similar route in banning the flag and all its depictions. Protests in the US against systemic racism have reopened debates surrounding the modern display of the flag.
