Reddit has chosen Michael Seibel to fill the void that co-founder, Alexis Ohanian had created when he stepped down from the company’s board. On leaving his position on the board on 6th June 2020, Ohanian had requested that a black person take it.
Alexis Ohanian had quit his position at Reddit amidst growing discontent with the way its executives were handling racist, hate and violent content on the platform. Now, according to a report from The Verge, Reddit has appointed Michael Seibel to take Ohanian’s place.
Who is Michael Seibel? Michael Seibel is a well-known name in the tech society and he is the CEO and co-founder of Y Combinator.
He was also one of the founders of Twitch, in its early days when it was still called Justin.tv. In addition to the above, he co-founded Socialcam, a mobile social application that allowed users to capture and share videos online with platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites. Autodesk had acquired Socialcam for $60 million in July 2012.

Speaking on his appointment to the Reddit board, Michael Seibel said:
“I want to thank Steve, Alexis, and the entire Reddit board for this opportunity. I’ve known Steve and Alexis since 2007 and have been a Reddit user ever since.
“Over this period of time I’ve watched Reddit become part of the core fabric of the internet and I’m excited to help provide advice and guidance as Reddit continues to grow and tackle the challenges of bringing community and belonging to a broader audience.”
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman also mentioned that the company is happy to have Seibel on board, he said:
“Few people have Michael’s deep background in tech and know the challenges and opportunities we face as well as he does, so we are honored he is joining us. Not to mention, he is one of the smartest and kindest people in tech.”
