Google has announced its decision to waive serving fees for news publications that use its Ad Manager platform for the next 5 months. Google’s Ad Manager is an automated platform that news outlets use for marketing messages on websites.

The search engine says the waiver will help publications that produce “original” journalism.

“With these efforts, we aim to help news organizations reduce some of the cost of managing their businesses and funding important journalism during this time,” Google said. The company adds that it will contact publications that qualify for the waiver in the next few days.

This waiver is in part of Google’s “journalism relief fund” announced earlier in March 2020. The fund will also include emergency grants to news outlets.

Google’s head of global news partnerships, Jason Washing reveals that more details would be announced in the coming days.

“During times of global crisis, people rely on quality journalism to stay informed and safe. And the ads that appear alongside news coverage help fund the journalists who write breaking news stories, and keep news sites and apps running,” Washing said in a blog post.

Facebook is also doing something similar a the $100 million donation it had announced on 30th March 2020. This donation will go towards supporting news organizations globally hurting from the coronavirus pandemic. The figure includes $25 million in grants and ad spending.
