Google almost out of China completely with Translate service shutdown

Google Translate service is no longer available in China after the company cited ‘low usage’ in the region. Shutting down this service means the search company is nearly completely cut off from Chinese-based users.

Of course, most of the smartphones used in the country are built using the Android architecture, which Google owns. However, on a broad scale, China and the American company are staying out of each other’s business.

The first significant indication of the severed relationship between both parties dates back to 2010, after China’s censorship forced Google to stop access to its search tool. Then, the government followed suit by banning Maps and Gmail. Now, the exit of Google Translate marks a big step.

China is the world’s largest economy, and many tech companies try to break into it to have at least a market share. For giant companies like Google, the problem is that the US government guides their actions. And the governments of both countries are not on the best of terms.

Without Google’s services, the market is fair game to search engine company Baidu and social media giant Tencent (TikTok owners), who can play by the Chinese government rules.

The search company still relies on factories in China to produce hardware, like many other electronic companies, including Apple. So, it will be some time before Google washes its hands entirely off China if it plans to do so.

With opposition from within and outside the company, the California-based tech giant is threading delicate waters.
