Former American Footballer Donald ‘Reche’ Caldwell is dead. He was shot in his home in Tampa, United States. While the first reports said he died in a robbery gone wrong, his mother and girlfriend claim it was a targeted killing.
According to his girlfriend, two men jumped out from the nearby bushes as she and Reche Caldwell were about to go on a date and ambushed him.
He was shot in the leg and chest and died in an ambulance.“He was set up,” Caldwell’s mother, Deborah, told the Tampa Bay Times. “I’m going to follow it all the way to the end. … You get killed right here in your hometown? You made a statement here, and y’all just took it away from us?”
Reche Caldwell was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the second round of the 2002 NFL draft and spent six seasons in the league. He appeared in 71 games with 29 starts during his pro career, finishing with 152 catches for 1,851 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Meanwhile, his best season came with New England in 2006. He was Tom Brady’s top receiver that season, recording a team-high 760 yards on a Patriots team that reached the AFC championship.
Caldwell’s career however took a bad hit after he dropped two passes in a 38-34 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC championship game that helped cost the Patriots a trip to the Super Bowl.
