The Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine also indicates promise against severe disease, however, due to insufficient data on its the FDA regards its protection against severe disease as inconclusive.

“With the availability of two vaccines now for the prevention of COVID-19, the FDA has taken another crucial step in the fight against this global pandemic that is causing vast numbers of hospitalizations and deaths in the United States each day,” FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn said in a press release.

The Moderna like the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine uses a gene-based technology. It contains a snippet of the genetic material that instructs the body to build copies of that protein in the COVID spike protein. Then it will use those copies to train the immune system to recognise and attack the actual virus.

More than 219,000 people per day on average test positive for the virus in the US. It has also killed more than 314,000 people in the U.S. and nearly 1.7 million worldwide.
