Elon Musk Dreams Of Making Space Travel As Common As Air Travel

The SpaceX Dragon Capsule carrying NASA astronauts, Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken, splashed into Florida’s Gulf Coast on Sunday, 2nd August 2020. It marked the first successful commercial crewed mission to and back from the International Space Station.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk had gotten many praises for the success of this historical US mission. However, it seems the tech boss still has not fully achieved his dream.

In a Twitter post on Monday, 3rd August 2020, Musk had said: “When space travel becomes as common as air travel, the future of civilization will be assured.”

This gives more credence to the speculations that very soon, those who can afford it will be able to go to space via commercial travels. It will not be long before other commercial space companies start to follow SpaceX’s footsteps.

However, like Tesla, SpaceX may be farther ahead of its competitors in the industry it specialises in.

When the SpaceX Dragon Capsule had landed on Sunday, private boats had been told to stay clear of it. This was because of the dangerous chemicals that were venting from its propulsion system.

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine had said that they were not expecting private boats to approach the Capsule. Besides the unexpected private boats that attempted to approach the SpaceX Capsule, the landing went according to plan.

In addition to opening up the commercial space travel industry; governments can now catch rides with companies like SpaceX to the International Space Station. It is not yet clear at this time if other world governments will be able to contract flights out to the company.

But this is likely because Bridenstine said that NASA will not be SpaceX’s only customer, he says; “We want to be one customer of many customers in a very robust commercial marketplace in low-Earth orbit.

“But we also want to have numerous providers that are competing against each other on cost and innovation and safety, and really create this virtuous cycle of economic development and capability.”

Thus, Elon Musk may be on the verge of turning his dream of regular private space travel into reality. Would you be willing to travel to space soon?
