An updated AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine data says that more recent analysis shows that its vaccine is actually 76 percent effective against symptomatic COVID-19. US health officials said in a public statement rebuking the company that the company’s previous data was outdated.

AstraZeneca had given the data as 79 percent in an earlier announcement. The initial percentage is reportedly based on an interim analysis from data collected until 17th February 2021. However, data collected after the date actually show that the real efficacy of the vaccine may have been 69 to 74 percent. A letter from the independent panel monitoring the clinical trial and reported by The Washington Post. The panel also “strongly recommended” those numbers be reported.

It’s important to note that although AstraZeneca had reported the higher percentiles of their vaccine efficacy, it is still a very good vaccine. The data still shows it’s more effective than the 50 percent efficacy the US Food and Drug Administration said it wanted from COVID-19 vaccines.

The AstraZeneca vaccine will still have a major role to play in the fight against COVID-19. It’s cheaper in comparison to the Moderna and Pfizer / BioNTech vaccines and can be stored at room temperature. In fact, for those reasons, it’s being earmarked as the main shot to vaccinate lower-income countries.

Overall, the company hasn’t shown transparency with regulators since when the trial had safety issues. The US clinical trial which should have cleared up the confusion instead let controversy get in the way of science
