Apple, Google and Microsoft working on passwordless sign-ins

Apple, Google, and Microsoft — the consumer tech big three — are working on passwordless sign-ins for users.

In a press release on May 5, 2022, Apple said that the collaboration would result in faster, easier, and more secure sign-ins. And since between them, they control almost every leading device, this collaboration could be a life-changer.

How would this work?

They will be working on a standard sign-in based on the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium — both bodies are internet authorities, with the FIDO already providing open-source and free authentication.

The tech world’s reliance on passwords has become obsolete because they don’t even guarantee safety anymore. In addition to being a hackable security measure, password management has also become a chore.

Already, many platforms support the FIDO Alliance standards, but it requires signing in to the website or app on devices previously to work. Meanwhile, the new capability that Apple, Google, and Microsoft are bringing will allow users to automatically access their FIDO sign credentials across devices without having been previously signed in. Additionally, it will let users access FIDO authentication on mobile devices to sign in to a platform nearby, even if they are running a different OS or browser.

The aim is to totally remove password sign-in from the process, even as an alternative or an account recovery method. And, it is not something that will happen at some obscure future time as the companies spearheading the development says it could be ready as soon as 2023.
