Adobe’s $20B Figma Acquisition Faces A Setback In Europe

Summary:

  • The European Commission is looking into the $20bn acquisition of Figma by Adobe, as the deal may impact competition in the interactive product design and whiteboarding software industry.
  • While the merger did not meet the criteria for the involved parties to notify European regulators, EU countries may report the case if they suspect such deals could diminish competition in Europe.
  • Adobe will now need clearance from the US, UK, and EU before completing the deal.

European Commission (EC) are looking into the $20 billion acquisition of Figma by Adobe on the grounds that it threatens competition.

In a press release, reported by TechCrunch, the commission mentioned that the deal could affect competition in the interactive product design and whiteboarding software industry.

However, the commission admitted that the merger did not meet the criteria for the involved parties to have to notify European regulators about it. Yet, it mentioned that member EU countries have a legal ground to report the case to it if they suspect that such deals could diminish competition in Europe.

Already, the Department of Justice in the US are looking over the deal and UK regulators are enquiring about it as well.

As TechCrunch adds in its report, the news does not mean that the EC is investigating the deal, instead, it just wants Adobe to make a formal report to it about the acquisition. Although, a formal report could them mean that the commission could commence its own investigation into the case.

Adobe will now have to be cleared by the US, UK and EU before it can finalise the deal.
