The Google Chrome Version 88.0.4324.150 update is one of the most important updates you can make to your browser right now. The new update provides a fix for a vulnerability that Google says its hackers are actively exploiting.

The search giant says that update is rolling out now across Windows, Mac, and Linux. Google is refusing to inform users of the specific details about the vulnerability “until a majority of users are updated with a fix”.

Google identifies the zero-day vulnerability with the tag CVE-2021-21148. The search giant describes the vulnerability as a “heap overflow” memory corruption bug in the V8 JavaScript engine.

However, according to ZDNet, Google says the bug was reported on 24th January 2021. This was just a day before the public revelation of a hacking campaign that appeared to be relying, in part, on an unpatched vulnerability in Chrome by Google’s Threat Analysis Group.

The Threat Analysis Group had said that government-backed hackers based in North Korea had set up a blog to lure their targets, after which they would infect their machines even if they were running fully-patched software.

It is thus very important to make sure you’re running the latest version of the Chrome browser. Usually, the browser updates itself automatically so yours might already be running the latest version. But you check and if it’s not, force an update in the “About Google Chrome” menu.
