Volkswagen announced that it has begun producing its first electric SUV, the ID 4 in Saxony, Germany. The ID 4  was previously referred to as the ID Crozz when it was still in the conceptual stage.

The vehicle will become the second vehicle from Volkswagen’s ID lineup of electric vehicles and it will sell in the US, China, and Europe. The first vehicle, ID 3, only sells in Europe.

Volkswagen already started the preproduction of ID 4 at its Anting plant in China. Volkswagen’s Chattanooga plant will also start production of the vehicle in 2022.

The automaker plans to stage a virtual reveal of the ID 4 SUV come September 2020. Pictures of the ID 4 leaked from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology earlier this year.

The ID 4 should get close to 300 miles of range on a full charge. This SUV is also built on the same MEB modular EV platform that will power Volkswagen’s other ID vehicles.

Additionally, it will be both an all-wheel and rear-wheel drive. However, only the all-wheel version will be available at launch. It will also have a digital cockpit that will operate using touchscreens and intuitive voice commands.

Volkswagen hopes that the launch of ID 4 is hitch-free than that of ID 3. The ID 3 launch was noted for its software glitches that delayed deliveries to customers.

The delays resulting from the launch formed part of the reasons Volkswagen’s CEO Herbert Diess left his role in June 2020. Diess now leads the larger Volkswagen Group.

Volkswagen has other vehicles in its ID electric lineup. The lineup includes concept versions of a larger SUV, ID Roomzz, an ID Buggy, and a revamped version of the microbus ID Buzz.
