The United States returns to #1 of Top 500 supercomputing ranking

The United States returned to the top spot of the Top 500 supercomputing ranking after losing the position to Japan last year. The Frontier system from Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is responsible for returning the US to #1.

Running on AMD EPYC CPUs, the machine is powered by Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s (HPE) Cray EX platform.

Although it is still in its integration and testing phase, the US Air Force and US Department of Energy will operate it when it is ready. The ratings shows that the ORNL beat its competitors, including last year’s champ, Fugaku, by a wide margin.

It was able to hit 1.1 exaflops while the Fugaku could not attain even half of its computational powers (it peaked at 442 pentaflops). You can read more about FLOPS here to understand the capability of these machine better.

However, it is important to note that before the ORNL, exaflops computing had been something of a myth in the computer world. Besides its speed, its efficiency is also something of note. The supercomputer could run at 52.23 gigaflops per watt, so, it is not just doing more computations but also saving energy.

ORNL lab director Thomas Zacharia said at a press conference: “The fact that the world’s fastest machine is also the most energy efficient is just simply amazing.”

China occupies two spots on the top 10 list and there are claims that it has two exascale supercomputers, which it is yet to reveal due to semiconductor politics. See the complete list of Top 500 Supercomputer ranking here.
