— Bluesky is being spearheaded by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.
— The platform is an initiative that allows developers create independent social networks.
There have been news of late that a new app is coming to give Twitter a run for its money. Called Bluesky and being developed by a team organised by Twitter’s co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey, the app is already quite famous.
So, what is Bluesky? It turns out that it is the name of the project initiative which aims to develop a decentralized social network protocol. On this protocol, there can exist several social networks with individual curation and moderation systems. All the networks or apps on the space can interact with one another.
The Initiative was approved by Twitter when Dorsey was still at the helm of affairs and part of its goals is to correct the mistakes that the microblogging site made. For example, Bluesky will mandate that apps built on its standard have a way to prevent virality algorithms from promoting controversy and moral outrage.
“We‘re building the AT Protocol, a new foundation for social networking which gives creators independence from platforms, developers the freedom to build, and users a choice in their experience,” the company says.
Additionally, Bluesky will be a a public benefit limited liability company without responsibilities to shareholders. In a statement in April 2022, the company assured that not even Elon Musk takeover would affect it.
Besides Jack Dorsey, Bluesky also has among its employees: Aaron Goldman (former Google and Twitter employee) as security engineer, Paul Frazee and Daniel Holmgren as protocol engineers.
As of when this article was published, Bluesky private beta is rolling out and you can sign up for it here.
