Fake Twitter employees mislead headline-eager news outlets

— News outlets publish reports of employees being seen leaving Twitter building after losing their jobs.
— The two men cited and interviewed for the reports never worked for Twitter.

News outlets, including CNBC and Bloomberg, reported that Twitter employees laid off by Elon Musk were spotted leaving the company’s headquarters with boxes, which expectedly contain their personal effects.

However, it turned out that the two men where never employed at the social media company. Instead, they were just there to trick eager reporters, which worked.

Tension was high after Elon Musk took over control of the firm. There had been speculations that the billionaire planned to lay off a massive 75% of the staff. So, the hoax concocted by the two men worked. Although, he did fire four top executives on taking over.

It gave Twitter’s new boss the ammunition he needed to further undermine mainstream news outlets. He tweeted after the mischief was uncovered:

Days before officially taking over Twitter, he had made fun of publications’ use of anonymous sources, a tagline which he said to be “According to unnamed sources close to the matter who wish to remain anonymous.”

Following his takeover of Twitter, Musk has taken the job of reassuring users quite seriously. As he understands that the platform’s main source of income is its users, he is attempting to appeal to every type of person. An effort that many commentators have said is futile.

Besides the fact that he needs people to stay on Twitter if it is to have a future, he has to also watch out for Bluesky, a competitor for the microblogging site that is being created by Twitter’s founder, Jack Dorsey.
