Yesterday, the news of Maryam Sanda went viral on the internet for various reasons. An FCT High Court in Maitama sentenced Maryam to death by hanging for killing her husband, Bilyaminu Bello. The court found Maryam guilty for killing her husband and thus convicted her of the charges.

On 19th November 2017, Maryam stabbed her husband to death following an allegation of infidelity against him after seeing a text message on his phone.

Later in that month, the Police charged her for culpable homicide and sought a death penalty against her on two counts. They informed the court that the killing was premeditated. According to the charge sheet, Sanda stabbed her husband with broken bottles on that fateful day.

Maryam Sanda is to be remanded in Suleja Correctional Centre until she exhausts her appeal rights.

Bilyaminu Bello, Maryam’s late husband, is a nephew of former PDP Chairman, Alhaji Bello Haliru Muhammad.

Maryam stood alongside her mother, Maimuna Aliyu, brother Aliyu Sanda and housemaid Sadiya Aminu. Her mother is a former Executive Director of Aso Savings and Loans. They were charged with assisting her to conceal the evidence by cleaning the blood of the deceased from the scene of the crime.

However, they pleaded ‘not guilty’, and the court discharged them. However, Maryam still had a case to answer.

Maryam Sanda’s case subsequently elicited diverse reactions from social media. Some were of the opinion that Maryam deserved the sentence for ending her husband’s life. Muslim law allows a man to marry up to four wives. For this reason, Maryam killing her husband over infidelity claims was a show of her loss of self-control.

Some people felt that the sentence was too harsh as there will be no one to take care of their child if she is hanged. Others believed it is a high profile case and, as such, Maryam will not get a lesser sentence even if she appeals the case.

Marriage, which should be blissful, has become the undoing of Maryam and her late husband. What is your take on the court judgement? Was the judge fair with sentencing Maryam to death.
