Microsoft Edge browser will now block ads that are too intrusive. This is a great development for Microsoft’s new Chromium-based Edge browser.

The app is now available for MacOS, Android, iOS and, of course, Windows. It is based on Google’s open-source browser technology.

The Edge project manager, Kyle Pflung, said, “We’re a member of the Coalition for Better Ads. As part of that, we plan to start enforcing these standards by blocking ads on sites which do not comply with CBA guidelines by default.”

The guidelines mean that they will now use technology to track ads on the Microsoft Edge browser that invade privacy. This move is in line with the ad blocking approach Google Chrome began in 2018.

However, in the latest update, Microsoft’s Edge privacy control will block advertisers and publishers from tracking users across the web. It will also offer three levels of tracking constraints. Users can choose between unrestricted, balanced and strict constraints.

Browsers and ads

Browsers are now getting more proactive with blocking ads, ad trackers and sneaky website codes that mine cryptocurrency. These codes make it easy to track your browser using fingerprints.

This isn’t exclusive to Microsoft. The Brave browser blocks all ads and trackers by default. Safari also uses an Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP) approach to block trackers. Mozilla, on the other hand, enabled tracker blocking by default in Firefox.

Chrome is not left behind. It has taken some measures recently to curtail the cookies that can be used to track users online.

On the part of the Edge browser though, Pflug said, “For most users, we find that extensions (combined with strong defaults around tracking prevention) are the best option here because you can choose from a variety of experiences and defaults. But we absolutely want to hear from you if you think this should be built in.”
