Google starts a self-repair program with iFixit for Pixel users and experts

You’ll recall that Samsung entered a collaboration with iFixit to teach users basic S21 repairs, and Google is doing the same thing for Pixel users.

Part of Google’s deal with the company is to make spare parts of its devices more available to the public for purchase. These parts will include batteries, display, and cameras for Pixel 6 to Pixel 2 devices.

Google says that its smartphone, Pixel parts, will start selling later in 2022 on iFixit. “We want you to have a great experience with your Pixel phone, and that includes easy access to high-quality and safe device repair if your phone is ever damaged,” the search engine giant further explains its stance.

Besides the parts on sale, Google encourages users to only go to verified technical experts to repair Pixel devices if they feel that they can’t do it themselves, despite the DIY tutorials that iFixit provides.

In addition, the company says that another reason for the iFixit deal is to extend a Pixel smartphone’s lifespan.

“Improving repairability is an important way to help extend the life and usefulness of your phone. And it’s just one of several steps we’re taking to help you make more sustainable choices,” Chief Operating Officer, Consumer Hardware at Google, Ana Corrales, says.

In related news, the company also entered a Chromebook repair program with Acer and Lenovo to provide repair information for schools using the devices. Also, it says that 100% of its hardware products in 2022 will include recycled materials in a bid to make a sustainable world.
