Qualcomm and Google have announced they’ll be working together to expand Project Treble, Google’s multi-year project that aims to simplify OS updates. Project Treble will make it easier for device manufacturers to upgrade phones and tablets to new Android versions without worrying about a Qualcomm chipset-specific software.

The objective is to simplify how users get the latest Android version on their phones. It will also ensure that the new Qualcomm chips will support four Android OS updates and four years of security updates. This will close the gap between  Android smartphones and Apple’s iPhones in terms of long-term software support.

The partnership means that Android smartphones with Snapdragon chipsets could get up to four Android OS versions; launch version; and three updates. It will also get four years of security updates, ensuring security improvements for a longer duration.

Project Treble when fully achieved will mean more longevity for Android devices, as they will be able to receive long term support.

“All Qualcomm customers will be able to take advantage of this stability to further lower both the costs of upgrades as well as launches and can now support their devices for longer periods of time,” the official blog post on the Android developer forum says.

Qualcomm is however only making this commitment for future devices, beginning with the upcoming Snapdragon 888. Snapdragon 888 is poised into smartphones in early 2021 and then Project Treble can kick-off. Rumours have it that the chip will power Samsung Galaxy S21 series and Oppo Find X3 Pro smartphones.
