Google Maps Street View is getting a mobile (iOS and Android) app update and a more portable camera; see how these will improve your experience.

In celebration of its 15th anniversary, Director of Products at Google Maps, Ethan Russell, made some exciting announcements on May 24.

“Today, we’re unveiling Street View’s newest camera, giving you more ways to explore historical imagery, and taking a closer look at how Street View is powering the future of Google Maps,” part of Russell’s note reads.

Adding to its Street View car and trekker cameras, Google is bringing a new ‘ultra-transportable’ camera that it claims will be the size of a house cat. The new camera has all the power, resolution and processing capabilities of a Street View car and can collect high-quality images in more places.

The company will be deploying its new camera everywhere necessary, including remote islands. mountain tops and even around small towns. Here is a peek at what the latest Google Maps Street View camera looks like:

Some of its perks includes its lightweight, customisable features, and smal size. These allows it to be moved around easily, used to capture different types of imagery, and fit into any car.

Besides the new camera, Google added the historical imagery feature to Android and iOS apps. If you don’t know how it works, it is quite simple:

  • Tap anywhere on the photo, when viewing Street View imagery of a place.
  • Information about the location pops up and you can tap “See more dates” to see the historical imagery of that place, dating back to when Google launched Street View in 2007.
