American President, Donald Trump on Tuesday announced his administration will be halting all funds to the World Health Organisation– WHO. Trump made the announcement while speaking at his daily nightly brief in the White House on Tuesday.
Trump’s recent decision to halt America’s funding to who is born out of his belief that WHO may have colluded with China to cripple America’s economy — China biggest economic rival. With $400 million in donations last year, America is the biggest contributor to WHO in the world.
“With the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, we have deep concerns whether America’s generosity has been put to the best use possible” Trump said during the briefing.
Trump believes The WHO held back crucial information at the early stages of the virus outbreak in favor of China, information that would have saved lives.
Recall that earlier in January, WHO was against Trump’s placing a travel ban on China in January deeming it unnecessary at that time.
“The WHO’s attack on travel restrictions put political correctness above life-saving measures,” he said. “Had the WHO done its job to get medical experts into China to objectively assess the situation on the ground and to call out China’s lack of transparency, the outbreak could have been contained at its source with very little death,” he said. “This would have saved thousands of lives and avoided worldwide economic damage. Instead, the WHO willingly took China’s assurances to face valu and defended the actions of the Chinese government”

Trump says the fund halt for the global agency will remain in place “for 60 to 90 days” while a review of WHO’s response to the outbreak of the coronavirus is conducted.
However, the Chinese government has urged President Trump to reconsider his stance and fulfil his obligations to WHO.
Speaking on the fund cut, Foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters that the virus, which has affected 2 million people globally is at a critical stage and the US’ decision would inadvertently affect all countries of the world.
The US as at Tuesday has over 28,000 deaths. With 600,000 reported cases,the US has three times more than any other country.
