Fortnite Down: Millions Of Players Stare At A Black Hole

Fortnite, one of the biggest games in the world, has been unplayable since yesterday. Everything was sucked into a black hole during the season 10 finale of Fortnite, appropriately titled “The End”. The in-game menus and maps and the games social media accounts, servers and forums all went dark. The only visible thing was the animation of a black hole.

This event, which also saw the overhaul of the map that many Fortnite players call home, possibly marks the end of chapter one. It’s widely believed that when the game is back up and running, it will be a rebooted version featuring a brand new map.

In the epic live-streamed event, “The End” happened in the most dramatic fashion.

Everything started when the meteor, which had been static in the middle of the island since its appearance at the beginning of season X, started to act up. The meteor crashed into the centre of the map, causing platers to be flung outwards. But then it eventually obliterated the entire map and sucked everything into a black hole.

Since then, Fortnite players haven’t been able to do much more than stare at the black hole. There have been flickers of activity, but not a whole lot has happened during that window. Players able to enter the Konami code were at least able to play a simple Space Invaders-style mini-game while waiting.

Those who weren’t able to log into the game in time for the event found it impossible to get into a game. In addition to that, the actual lobby and character screens were similarly pulled into the black hole. At one point the official Fortnite Twitter account even deleted all of its tweets. Also, Epic’s public Trello board, used to track in-game issues, similarly went dark. Meanwhile, PlayStation had to issue a statement confirming that the game and all of those V-bucks you spent weren’t gone for good.

It appears to be extended downtime, but one that’s connected to the ever-changing Fortnite lore. The in-game event is currently being watched by millions across platforms like Twitch, YouTube and Twitter. There have been rumours of a new map for some time now, even though it is still unclear just how big of a change Epic would actually make.

Chapter 2 might just see the unveiling of a brand new map.

Meanwhile, more than 10 new points of interest have been discovered in the game’s code, which represents a much bigger change than previous seasons. On Friday, Epic tweeted out the cryptic phrase “the end is near.” Today that was followed by “this is the end.

Some Twitter users and popular celebrities were quick to jump in on the joke.
