Elon Musk says that Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite-based internet provider, will double in speed “later this year”. The CEO said it as a reply to someone who had just received their Starlink beta kit.
SpaceX currently promises speeds between 50 to 150Mbps, but Musk specifically mentions a goal of 300Mbps in his tweet.
Speed will double to ~300Mb/s & latency will drop to ~20ms later this year

300Mbps is faster than what most people currently have access to, especially in the low-to-medium population density areas the CEO mentioned as his target in a second tweet.
Most of Earth by end of year, all by next year, then it’s about densifying coverage.
Important to note that cellular will always have the advantage in dense urban areas.
Satellites are best for low to medium population density areas.

Musk also says that their latency should improve to around 20ms. The speed test screenshots show their latency at 34 and 44ms respectively. Latency is a measure of the time it takes for data transfer to occur. On Starlink’s website, it is said that its aim is to create high-speed, low-latency internet that is accessible worldwide. The website also asks testers to expect between 20 and 40ms during the beta.
Apart from speed, Musk also states his vision for the areas Starlink will cover: “Most of Earth by end of the year, all by next year, then it’s about densifying coverage”.
