Electric truck maker Rivian considers firing 700 employees

Rivian is considering firing 700 employees despite plans to produce 25,000 vehicles by the end of 2022. Although the news is not yet confirmed, Bloomberg, which broke it, says that we should expect an official announcement in the coming weeks.

The company’s spokesperson, Miranda Jimenez, said that Rivian had nothing to say about the report. However, the failure to deny it may be as incriminating as confirming it.

If the company goes ahead to lay off this number of people, it would have reduced 5 per cent of its employees. Although, this may not readily affect its production plans because the people it seeks to fire were added when the company scaled up.

In the first three months of this year, RIvian claims to have delivered 1,227 vehicles out of the 2,553 that it produced. Among its clientele is Amazon, for which it makes delivery vans. The company also makes pickups and SUVs.

Its problem is currently meeting up with orders, which are about 200,000 already. With 25,000 vehicles planned for the year, there is doubt if Rivian would ever be able to fulfill the orders it has pending. In addition to this, the company also lost about $1.59 billion in Q1 2022, and it aims to cut costs by letting employees go.

Rivian is not doing anything that has not been done and its rival, Tesla, is notoriously famous for letting staff go as soon as it encounters financial difficulty.
