Burna Boy Wins Grammy With “Twice As Tall” As Wizkid Bags Win With “Brown Skin Girl”

It’s indeed a huge night for afrobeats, for Nigerians, and Africa as Burna Boy and Wizkid bag Grammy wins at the 63rd Grammy Awards held on March 14th 2021.

Burna Boy real name Damini Ogulu won Grammys in the Best Global Music Album category with his 2020 album “Twice As Tall”.

The self-proclaimed African Gaint beat Antibalas for Fu Chronicles, Bebe Gilberto for Agora, Anousha Shankar for Love Letters and Tinariwen for Amadjar.

 

Burna Boy was previously nominated for the same category which was then named Best World Music album in 2019 with his “African Giant” album. He however lost to Beninoise singer Angelique Kidjo with her album “Celia”. His album becomes the first Nigerian album and also the first afrobeats to win at the Grammys.

Nigerian afrobeats superstar Wizkid also picked up a Grammy in the Best Music Video for his song with Beyoncé; “Brown Skin Girl”, from “Lion King: The Gift album.”

The Best Music Video award is given to the artist, video director, and video producer. Blue Ivy also won for her feature on brown skin girl.

 

Wizkid will get a Grammy statuette for this collaboration as the rule provides that the artist — or artists—- get a gramophone each for their work. Saint Jhn, Blue Ivy, and the video director Jenn Nkiru will get statuettes each.

 

Congratulations to Burna Boy and Wizkid for the huge wins and congratulations to Nigerians! They indeed brought it home.
