Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation published the 2019 highlights of its Global Health Financing. Joe Cerrell the Managing Director, Global Policy and Advocacy wrote the article. Reading it, we see that tech companies do not seem to be doing enough for health advocacy.
Global Fund raised an impressive total of $14.2 billion during the year. This fund is gathered in an effort to end HIV, tuberculosis and malaria. Also, it is targeted at saving the lives of approximately 6 million people in the next 3 years.
One interesting thing to note is that the funds were not only secured from donor countries. Even countries suffering from infectious diseases contributed to the effort. An excerpt from the article reads:
“And it wasn’t just donor countries that stepped up.
Countries that bear the highest burden from infectious diseases also committed to increase domestic spending on healthcare systems and initiatives, which will bring benefits beyond preventing and treating specific diseases by improving people’s overall health and wellbeing.”

The UAE also pledged $2.6 billion to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) strategy. The Vaccine Alliance, Gavi, aims to acquire renewed funding in London by June 2020.
On World Polio Day, 24th October, the foundation announced that only one strain of wild poliovirus exists. They had succeeded in eradicating much polio causing viruses, including type-3.
It thanked President Macron of France and the Crowned Prince of Abu Dhabi, His Highness Sheikh Muhamed bin Zayed, for their efforts.
Gavi also delivered 700 million doses of vaccines in protection against 17 different diseases. The funds will support tools delivery, treatments and disease combating programs.
The concluding statement reads:
“These funding breakthroughs were especially critical at a time when it’s proven difficult to keep global health at the top of the agenda.”
Bill Gates who owns Microsoft keeps breaking barriers with his effort for a healthier world population. More tech companies are encouraged to also step up with this kind of initiative.
Tweets thanking the entrepreneur rolled in online:
