In this article, we preview tech inventions from Apple, Facebook and others that couldn’t be used in the last decade simply because they didn’t exist.

Technology evolves every day, with new innovations to improve daily living coming at a fast pace. It can be taken for granted as they often become part of our everyday life. See some of the most used tech inventions of this decade here;

Instagram

Instagram launched in October 2010. On the first day 25,000 people signed up and by 2011, Instagram was Apple iPhone’s app of the year. By April 2012, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg bought the company for $1 billion.

Instagram now has over a billion active users and is into live video, stories and face filters. It has also added a long-form video service called IGTV.

4G networks have actually been around for less than a decade. The network made the internet much faster and better. It was an upgrade on the 3G wireless network.

Sprint’s HTC Evo was the first 4G phone by some months as it came out in March 2010. Followed by this was a Samsung model in June. 4G didn’t come to the iPhones until the iPhone 5 in 2012.

For the next decade, carriers are expanding to 5G networks, and tech companies are building 5G-compatible smartphones.

The iPad

Steve Jobs  described it as:

“the best browsing experience you’ll ever have.”

He further said on stage in January 2010:

“It’s unbelievably great. Way better than a laptop, way better than a smartphone”

The device has gone through several modifications since then. In 2019, Apple unveiled a new 10.2-inch iPad, iPad Mini, and iPad Air.

Snapchat

Snapchat

Snapchat started in 2011 as a messaging app for sending disappearing photos. Then, it was called Pictaboo and it had the same ghost icon, Ghostface Chillah.

By September 2011, its name changed to Snapchat and the app began to gain popularity especially amongst teenagers

Six years later, Snapchat has expanded into TV-like shows, partnerships with publishers, hardware products, and augmented reality.

Apple Watch

Apple Watch

Apple launched its first Apple Watch at its September keynote event in 2014. However, the watch didn’t officially go on sale until April 2015.

The watch was Apple’s first brand-new piece of hardware since Apple’s co-founder Steve Jobs died in 2011. It also sparked a growth trend in the wearables industry, a category Apple now dominates with the Apple Watch reportedly enjoying nearly 50% of the market share in 2019.

Since the Apple Watch’s launch, Apple has introduced several more versions, the latest being the Apple Watch Series 5 released in September 2019.
