ZTE aims to become the first company to ship a phone with an under-display camera with its Axon 20 5G launching in September 2020. Several phone manufacturers have tested the feature, however, they have not succeeded enough to be on the shelves.

The Chinese smartphone maker plans to launch the Axon 20 5G on 1st September 2020. ZTE acknowledges that “all the major industry players” are working on under-display cameras in a press release.

However, it plans to be the first one to ship the smartphone to customers. According to ZTE, the Axon 20 5G is the “world’s first mass-produced 5G smartphone”.

Both Oppo and Xiaomi had teased prototype smartphones that include a front camera hidden beneath the screen in 2019.

Xiaomi explained that for its prototype, the under-display camera would be embedded to the top of the device with a “special-low-reflective glass with high transmittance” covering it. This will allow the display to be transparent enough to take pictures. Oppo showed off its prototype at the MWC Shanghai in 2019, however, there was still much to be done on it.

In a bid to extend the display of their devices, manufacturers have been toying with relocating the selfie camera from its current place. Huawei’s Y9 Prime included a feature that allowed the selfie camera to pop out from the top. Lenovo also released a new gaming phone with a pop-up selfie camera on the side of the phone.

According to  XDA-Developers, based on listings of Chinese regulator TENAA; the Axon 20 5G will have a 32-megapixel front camera, a 64-megapixel rear camera, an 8-megapixel rear camera, and a pair of two-megapixel rear cameras. The phone also reportedly has a 6.92-inch HD OLED display and up to 12GB of RAM. However, for now, there is no word on the pricing or the regions where it will be available.
