Zoom Improves Security, Adds 2FA Support On Desktop And Mobile Apps

Zoom is making its desktop and mobile apps more secure by adding support for two-factor authentication (2FA). The move gives users an extra layer of security to their account as opposed to just the standard password.

The company announced in a blog post, that users can now add the extra layer of security via the Zoom Dashboard. Zoom had previously offered 2FA on web-only, but not on its desktop and mobile clients. The company says all users will be able to access the new security feature, including its free customers.

Zoom is also providing users more ways to receive their one-time login codes. Users only had the option of using an authentication app like Google Authenticator to generate the code. Now, users can opt to receive the one-time login codes via SMS.

Apart from 2FA, Zoom is also providing support for recovery codes. This will allow users to gain access to their accounts in the event they lose their mobile devices.

The company has had to prioritise security after a myriad of breaches earlier in 2020. Due to lapse security, many users began to experience strangers hijacking their calls in a feature that became known as Zoombombing.

Zoom had announced in June 2020 that it was rolling out support for end-to-end encryption to its free users. The company also changed its security protocols in an attempt to mitigate unauthorised users from gaining access to meetings. The company provides a guide on how users can enable the 2FA here.
