Another reason why you should be creating more YouTube Shorts

YouTube has announced that about 1.5 billion monthly users watch Shorts, and this is a good reason for you to keep creating these short-form videos.

As a direct competitor of TikTok, YouTube launched Shorts in 2020 and started by giving content creators cash bonuses for posting short videos. Its strategy paid off as the feature has become the most prominently used one on the platform.

YouTube’s announcement of 1.5 billion users watching Shorts every month is impressive because the platform records a total of 2 billion monthly users. In addition, in April 2022, Google says that the short-form videos record nearly 30 billion views daily. That is a lot of hours spent on the platform!

Also, while we mentioned that YouTube started a reward program for creators, the company itself is in a pickle. Usually, it makes most of its money from ads, which play before and during long videos. With Shorts, this format may be challenging to emulate. So, it needs to figure out how to make money from it and has begun a trial.

Alphabet CFO Ruth Porat explained, “We are experiencing a slight headwind to revenue growth as Shorts viewership grows as a percentage of total YouTube time. We are testing monetization on shorts, and early advertiser feedback and results are encouraging.”

The company will need to figure its strategy out quickly because the fund it started to encourage more creators to jump on the Shorts trend is nearly exhausted. Likely, it will have to settle for ad revenue sharing.
