YouTube is still more popular than TikTok, even among teens

According to a new survey by Pew Research Center, YouTube proved more popular than TikTok among teens between 13 to 17. The researchers found that 95 per cent of the surveyed teenagers use YouTube.

The study was to observe the use of social media platforms like YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, Twitch, WhatsApp, Reddit, and Tumblr among teens.

This result proves that teens only spend more time on TikTok and not that there are more people using the platform. Compared to YouTube’s 95 per cent, only 67 per cent said that they use the short-video site.

However, while 19 per cent had said that they use YouTube almost constantly, 15 per cent said the same about TikTok.

YouTube’s popularity may be down to the fact that you can use it without having to create an account, and with it pre-installed in many smartphones, some teenagers just continue watching content on the platform seamlessly.

With YouTube and TikTok leading among teens, it is further proof that video content is now more appealing than its written counterpart among the age group.

Facebook is third, with only 32 per cent saying that they use it and others like Twitter and Tumblr come fourth and fifth. Since 2014/2015, less teenagers are willing to engage on Facebook and Twitter is still finding it difficult to corner that demographic as well.

As had been widely documented, Facebook and YouTube have continued to combat TikTok in the short-video area by rolling out similar features of their own; Reels and Shorts, respectively. Also, cross sharing from TikTok has also given Reels some relevance as well among TikTokers.
