Xbox weekend outages expose offline gaming issues

Xbox weekend outages would not be news to gamers who were locked out of their accounts for hours (on two different occasions), but it may be intriguing to note how this exposes a flaw in the console’s engineering.

For those not in the know, Xbox suffered an outage on Friday night and briefly on Saturday morning. It made it impossible to launch digital games, make purchases, access Netflix and Disney Plus, and start Cloud Gaming.

However, just hours after it was fixed, the gaming service experienced an outage even longer than the first on Saturday and into Sunday. It came with practically the same set of problems as the first one.

However, what was notable about the outages was that players who owned consoles at home could not play offline, which was not supposed to be the case since they were trying to launch games that they already owned and not via the Xbox Cloud gaming service.

Users claimed to get a ‘sign in’ prompt when they attempted to play offline games. And this prompts the question of what edge a gamer has if they can’t enjoy the service offline like ‘ordinary’ streamers.

By early Sunday, Xbox Support announced that the issue had been fixed. “Players should no longer be seeing issues when it comes to purchases, launching games, or joining Cloud Gaming sessions. Thanks for being patient. Happy gaming!,” it Tweeted.
