If you had to relocate to a place you’d never been before and get paid to live there, would you move? Of course, you’d consider everything involved: the people you’d leave behind, your career, starting afresh and the place you’re moving to. There’s always a catch, isn’t there? Well, Molise, a region in Italy, will pay you €700 (about ₦282,000) every month to move in. What’s the catch, you ask? Read on to find out.

Molise is an underpopulated region in Italy, Europe. The region has lost the most inhabitants in the country in the last five years. More than 9000 people have moved away from the small mountainous region since 2014. This leaves the population at around 305,000 inhabitants.

Molise, Italy

Molise has about 136 towns in it. But according to national statistic office Istat, more than 100 of these towns have fewer than 2000 people living in them and six have fewer than 200. Not a single birth was registered in nine of its towns last year.

The president, Donato Toma, says that anyone willing to live in a village with fewer than 2,000 residents will be offered €700 (about ₦282,000) per month for three years.

However, the applicants must agree to run a business for at least five years, and they have to do it in a town with under 2000 inhabitants. Starting a business will also help to contribute to the local economy.

At first, Italian villages began selling houses for $1 (about ₦360), a move that seemed too good to be true. But this latest offer from Molise, Italy makes even that deal look like a ripoff.

The region of Molise is a wild, beautiful but overlooked area that lies east of Rome. It will pay people more than $27,000 (about ₦9.8 million) to settle in one of 106 underpopulated villages in an effort to prevent their communities from dying. This will help the new entrants to settle in an area known for its green pastures, olive groves and snowy mountaintops.

The scheme launches this month. It is designed to combat depopulation, which is a chronic problem in rural Italy, especially in the poorer south.

Antonio Tedeschi, the regional councillor responsible for the idea, said:

“I want my region to undergo a renaissance and avoid its authentic villages turning into ghost towns. We need to safeguard our roots.”

“We’re targeting the many people from Molise who live elsewhere and plan to come back home, but also non-Molisans who’d like a change of lifestyle and to enjoy the tranquillity and healthiness of our wonderful region.”

“The goal is to breathe new life and revamp the local economy. Newcomers are free to kick-start anything they please in order to get our financial support: a small inn, restaurant, bar, B&B, a tiny rural farm, artisan boutique, library or shop selling local gourmet excellences.”

He added that the region has set aside nearly €1 million to fund the scheme over 2019 to 2020. Molise particularly encourages young people and couples with children to apply to the scheme.

Applications will open via the region’s website on 16th September 2019. The website will remain open for 60 days. Applicants must commit to moving to Molise, getting a VAT number and running their business for at least five years. However, they will only receive the grant for three years, two years less than they are required to live in Molise.
