The police recently arrested the founder of Wikileaks, Julian Assange, in the United Kingdom. This comes right after Ecuador withdrew his asylum status. They arrested him in London at the Ecuadorian embassy where he claimed asylum since 2012. He is now in custody at a central police station in the British city.

Assange will now face the court at Westminster Magistrates. This comes a year after the president of Ecuador said he would leave the property. The president also revealed he was in talks with British authorities to end his asylum.

In October 2018, the founder was ordered to avoid political interference with the embassy’s Wi-Fi. He also received the house rules, like a rule for him to look after his own cat. Assange then went on to appoint Kristinn Krafnsson to replace him as the editor at WikiLeaks since they restricted his internet access.

WikiLeaks leaks

In 2010, WikiLeaks became popular for publishing a collection of classified United States documents leaked by former Army Intelligence analyst, Chelsea Manning. She had shared some exclusive military and diplomatic secrets.

In 2012, Assange was granted asylum to avoid his extradition to Sweden over s****l assault allegations. He has since been connected to the Russian interference in the US 2016 Presidential elections. He allegedly published over 19,000 emails stolen from Hilary Clinton’s campaign and party’s national committee. One of the 12 Russian officers charged for the crime was reportedly in contact with Assange.

Assange faced charges in November 2018 for the publication of classifies documents by the US justice department. This was following an obvious error in an unrelated court filing.

The president of Ecuador, Lenin Moreno, on Twitter, declared Assange’s right of asylum unsustainable and not viable. Moreno accused him of discourteous, aggressive, hostile and threatening behaviour.

Wikileaks is an international non-profit organisation that publishes secret information, classified media and news leaks published by anonymous sources. The website kicked off in Iceland in 2006. It claims to have access to a database of 10 million documents as of 2016.
