Technology is here to shape the future, even for cows. Virtual reality(VR) is coming for these herbivores. As announced by a team of researchers at Russia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food, they have developed VR headsets for cows living on a farm just outside of Moscow.

The devices will be used to convince these dairy cows that they’re standing in summer fields, rather than cold wintery ones. This is to calm them down and reduce any anxiety, but ultimately it makes them produce more milk.

The herd donned VR systems adapted for the “structural features of cow heads” and were shown a “unique summer field simulation program”. Moscow’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food cited research which they say has shown a link between a cows’ milk yield and their emotional experience. Initial test reports it boosts “the overall emotional mood of the herd”.

Positive Results on VR Tests

According to a statement from the ministry, the experiments took place at the RusMoloko farm in Moscow’s Ramensky district.

“Examples of dairy farms from different countries show that in a calm atmosphere, the quantity, and sometimes the quality, of milk increases markedly,” it read.

Researchers will examine the effects of the program in a long-term study. The developers reportedly hope to expand the project if positive results continue.

It may be small-scale for now, but this trial raises some questions about the uses of this technology. Especially when it becomes a more widespread technology. In this case, VR is essentially distracting attention away from a harsh environment, to trick the cows into thinking that they’re standing in a nice warm field when, in actual fact, they really aren’t.
