Facebook is notifying Messenger and Instagram users in Europe that some of its features are temporarily unavailable. Both the Facebook Messenger and Instagram European users received a small message in their apps; notifying them that some features aren’t available to “respect new rules for messaging services in Europe”.

The company doesn’t specifically say what features will be missing, however, it says on its support pages that polls on both Messenger and Instagram are currently unavailable in Europe. Also, Facebook informed users about a lack of stickers on Instagram and personalized replies on Messenger.

Other missing features may include a lack of certain file sends on Messenger, the ability to share AR effects in DMs on Instagram, and missing nicknames.

The reason Facebook has temporarily disabled these features is to comply with new rules on data usage in EU countries.

The new rules are part of the national implementations that are taking place of the 2002 Privacy and Electronic Communications Directive (ePrivacy Directive). The ePrivacy Directive imposes stricter rules on data use across communications services that operate in countries in the European Union.

It is still unclear when Facebook plans to restore the features. A spokesperson told The Verge that it expects that most of the features will return “very soon”.  Its users will also expect that this happens sooner than later.
