Who Is Jeff Bezos’ Replacement As Amazon’s New CEO, Andy Jassy?

You must have heard as it’s trending across news sites and social media that Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos is stepping down from his role as CEO, and in his stead, Andy Jassy will take up the role. Bezos is to leave the role in the third quarter of 2021, making way for Jassy.

Jassy has been a part of Amazon since as far back as 1997. He founded and led the Amazon Web Services (AWS) team since its beginning in 2003. The team comprised of 53 people and in 2016 was announced as the CEO of AWS, stepping up from the Senior Vice-president role.

AWS is now a huge part of the internet at large, to the extent that AWS outages can take down whole sections of the internet for hours. AWS creates infrastructure used by millions of companies, schools, and governments to run websites and apps.

All of that growth is dues to Jassy’s leadership. Perhaps his choice as Bezos’ replacement signals the direction the company is willing to take going forward.

The company owns almost half the world’s public cloud infrastructure market. It also has a huge 30% market share of the cloud computing market.

Jassy graduated with honors from Harvard College and then went on to earn an MBA from Harvard Business School. “I took my last final exam at HBS, the first Friday of May in 1997, and I started Amazon next Monday. No, I didn’t know what my job was going to be, or what my title was going to be,” Jassy said in a Harvard Business School podcast in September 2020.

Bezos in a letter to Amazon employees expressed “full confidence” in Andy Jassy. “Andy is well known inside the company and has been at Amazon almost as long as I have. He will be an outstanding leader,” he said.
