National Nurses Day is celebrated annually on May 6th to raise awareness of the important role nurses play in society.
It marks the beginning of National Nurses Week, which will run till 12th May to commemorate the birthday of Florence Nightingale, founder of modern nursing.
Nurses and midwives play a vital role in providing health services.
These health workers give lifesaving immunizations and health advice, looking after older people, and generally meeting everyday essential health needs.
They are often, the first and only point of care in their communities. According to WHO the world needs 9 million more nurses and midwives if it is to achieve universal health coverage by 2030.
This is why the World Health Assembly has designated May 2020 The International Month of the Nurse and Midwives.
