WhiteLab Genomics raises $10 million to fund AI-powered genomic therapy

WhiteLab Genomics, a company running an AI platform that discovers and develops gene therapy, has raised $10 million in funding.

The company, based in France, uses predictive software tech to fast track gene and cell therapies. The founders hope that they can help increase effectiveness of therapies than what is currently available.

A leader in a branch of medical technology that is helping improve an equally new branch of medicine, WhiteLab Genomics was founded in 2019 by David Del Bourgo and Julien Cottineau.

Typically, gene therapy is a treatment method that involves replacing absent on defective genes in cells to cure genetic disorders. It is under cell therapy, which involves altering cells to cure ailment. The aim of gene therapy is to replace the need for drugs and surgery in treating diseases like cystic fibrosis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and so on.

The current method is not only costly but also time consuming as it involves trial and error. Where the tech company comes in is that its platform leverages deep learning techniques to calculate several scientific hypotheses at once, instead of testing them painstakingly one after the other. Also, it predicts the best molecular design for therapy by looking at different genetic variants.

“We provide customers with exhaustive predictive models combining genetics and computational biology in order to design and select the top candidates to be tested in the lab,” Del Bourgo told TechCrunch.

WhiteLab Genomics partners specialised institutions to get as much data as possible to train their algorithms. Currently, the company is working on a DNA-based therapy for lysosomal diseases (in the metabolic conditions category), cell stem therapy for sickle cell disease (in the blood diseases category) and immuno-gene therapies for cancers.
