WhatsApp continues to offer a better experience to its users with every succeeding version of Android or iOS. While building these new features, developers keep in mind newer platforms and technologies hence, they eventually drop support for some of the older platforms that are barely in use. WhatsApp says that it is going to drop support for some older platforms and this means ending users’ access from those ‘old’ platforms.

WhatsApp will drop support for an obsolete OS platform and also stop supporting older versions of Android and iOS. After Microsoft dropped support for its Windows Phone support recently, WhatsApp announced that all Windows Phone devices won’t support WhatsApp starting from 1st January 2020. WhatsApp will stop working completely on all Windows Phone devices.

This also applies to some older Android and iOS devices. Any Android device running on Android 2.3.7 and older will no longer support WhatsApp anymore from February 1, 2020. Similarly, all iPhones that are still running on iOS 8 and older will not support WhatsApp anymore.

The Windows Phone platform, however, has long lost popularity for a long while with many app developers withdrawing support for the platform for a long time. Hence, those using basic apps won’t be using these Windows phones.

This also applies to Android 2.3.7 as we have stated. But for iOS 8 devices, this will not apply to iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S. WhatsApp will not stop working on these phones because the iPhone 4 series got the iOS 9 at its last OS upgrade. All users have to do is upgrade their devices.

WhatsApp upgrades may not affect a lot of its users as the platforms it is dropping are quite old. However, those affected will have to switch devices to continue with the Facebook-owned app.
