WhatsApp rolls out call links support

WhatsApp rolls out call links feature for users to invite others to join a group call, in a bid to encourage more community collaboration.

The chat platform is staying true to its promise of bringing more community tools in the second half of 2022. Its latest feature is going to turn the tide in its unspoken battle to supplant productivity and group collaboration platforms.

“We’re rolling out call links on WhatsApp starting this week so you can share a link to start a call with a single tap. We’re also testing secure encrypted video calling for up to 32 people. More coming soon,” Meta CEO had announced via a Facebook post.

You can also send call links to people that are not on your contact list, making it easier to communicate for business and personal reasons.

When WhatsApp announced its vision for Communities, no one without inside information could have guessed just how many tools were coming. Its initial blog post had only highlighted tools like reactions, admin delete, file sharing, and larger voice calls.

With the above-mentioned features already available, the company is not letting its hands rest. Besides the several privacy tools that WhatsApp rolled out, it is battling a larger group of competitors.

The latest call links feature only makes the direction clearer. Software like Slack, Google Workspace, Microsoft Teams, Chatter by Salesforce, Zoho, and others have been the go-to solutions for corporate communications. However, WhatsApp is stepping up to offer similar features.

While the company is yet to openly declare its desire to go from just a chat platform to a corporate tool, it is approaching that description. And, if we are being honest, the move makes sense for Meta.

WhatsApp’s parent company recently witnessed its money-making machine, Facebook, record a decline in revenue for the first time in years with the relentless privacy checks making it harder to make money from advertisers as it has done for many years now.

So, its desire to explore other streams of revenue is wise. Likely, it will finally give it a way to start charging subscriptions on its WhatsApp for Business arm.
