There have been rumours that Cartoon Network may be shutting down soon due to the changes going on at the parent company, Warner Bros. However, the latest report is that the entertainment channel is staying around a little longer.
Polygon reported that Warner Bros. TV Group laid off 82 staffers on Wednesday across divisions such as its scripted, unscripted, and animation arms. The company will not fill the empty positions that opened up with its layoffs. Instead, it will merge the WBA and CNS development and production teams.
The fear surrounding Cartoon Network’s future is not just made-up as it comes from the new CEO, David Zaslav’s mandate to cut as much as $3 billion from Warner Media’s expenses. Zaslav had gone on a spree in early August, laying off 14% of HBO Max employees and canceling an almost-ready Batgirl movie. Then, several cartoons and TV shows were taken off the platform as well.

The vultures began circling above Cartoon Network, figuratively, as it appeared to be on the verge of extinction. “Cartoon Network Studios, as you know it, is gone thanks to David Zaslav. It consolidating into a single unit with Warner Bros. Animation, and this is HUGE news. It’s also an ominous sign for the future of new, original Cartoon Network animation,” news outlet Cartoon Brew said on Twitter.
Despite the signs, insiders say that the network remains strong. We are not sure if this is a sign of well-founded faith or because of some other details that the public is not privy to. Regardless, as we saw in the case of Google Stadia, upper management decisions could blindside even people working directly under them.
We will have to wait to confirm the fate of Cartoon network.
