The ID 5 is to be a coupe version of the ID 4 compact SUV. The ID 4 went on sale in Europe, China, and North America in 2020. It’s also the first vehicle built on VW’s modular MEB electric architecture to be available in North America. However, its predecessor, the hatchback ID 3, is only being sold in Europe.
The ID 5 may also not go on sale in the US. According to a VW spokesperson, “There are no plans to bring the car to the US at the moment”.
Before the ID 5, Volkswagen subsidiary, Porsche, put its first all-electric sports car, the Taycan, on sale in 2019. Its first battery-electric SUV, The E-Tron, from Volkswagen Group-owned Audi, also debuted in 2018.
