Visit Faroe Islands is a tourist company that offers people visiting any of the 18 small Faroe Islands services to help them enjoy their tour, now, it is also offering them a virtual tour opportunity during the pandemic.
In a YouTube post from the company’s official page, it announced the innovative tourism arm. The post is titled: We’re introducing: Remote Tourism! You can watch the full video below.
At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the company had said that tourists were no longer allowed to visit the islands. However, the Director of Visit Faroe Islands, Gudrid Hojgaard have now announced the new opportunity for tourists.
She mentioned that the idea was borne out of the employees having enough free time on their hands. The virtual tour is different from those that employ the use of robots.

This time, virtual tourists will be visiting the Faroe Islands through one of the company’s employees. Thus, giving them the unique human feeling that comes with real outdoor tourism.
According to Hojgaard’s description, a guide will be fitted with a camera and headphones to see and listen to instructions. Then, a virtual tourist from home can control the person from their smartphones.
The remote control layout looks like a game control pad. It has the four cardinal directions and a round button on the right that instructs the guide to jump. The guides move according to the tourist’s instructions.
The Director adds that each virtual tour starts at a new location. Tourists can ride horses, sail through water and even control a helicopter on the Faroe Islands from their homes.
The tourists end up where they want and the only caveat is that they are not to put guides in harm’s way. For a free tour, you can go to Faroe Islands virtual tour page.
