In a blog post on Vertiv’s website, the company’s Vice President Tom Nation gives insightful advice to service personnel and IT professionals working during the pandemic.
Nation points out that the recommendations from regional public health officials should always be taken into consideration. Also, before sharing his “best practices” advice, he tells readers to catch up on what the World Health Organization (WHO) says on precaution as well.
In addition, he acknowledges that in the work field, it is those that have to keep data centers running that would see the most strain at this time. Likely, they may even have to be exempted from some lockdown rules.
If you find yourself in this category of workers, then, you will need to put Tom Nation’s recommendations in mind. See them below:
— Essential tasks that cannot be postponed include emergency response, repair, and preventive maintenance. Non-essential tasks are those that are not needed to sustain and/or improve vital applications. Simply, they are not considered as critical infrastructure. These can be postponed.

— Ensuring safety procedures on-site such as temperature checks, movement history to check for possible exposure, daily cleaning and social distancing practices.
— Giving team members and field workers the authority to stop working at any time if the site does not meet safety protocols.
— Limiting technicians to working within driving distance. This is to cut down on public transportation use as well as trains and airplanes.
— If service personnel develop a fever, they should self-quarantine and this applies if they have an exposure issue.
— They should also put their safety and that of others in mind. Thus, they should maintain social distancing, regular hand washing and many more recommended by the WHO.
— When dealing with sites that have remote service; technicians should leverage this and reduce physical visits to when it is necessary. They can collect and analyse data remotely to determine how serious the situation on the site is.
Tom Nation ends the blog post by stating that while “IT and connectivity [are] more important than ever”; some physical visits are avoidable. He has been working at Vertiv since 2011 and he serves as both Vice President and General Manager of Power System Services.
