Delivery giant, Hermes has announced that it is adding 10,500 new jobs in the UK. A surge in demand from shoppers from home during lockdown has seen business boom and left it short of hands.

The new jobs will include 1,500 full-time roles across its delivery network and head office, in addition to 9,000 freelance couriers.

Hermes boss Martijn de Lange says the company sees no sign of the growth slowing down soon.

“The pandemic has expedited the already phenomenal growth of online shopping and we see no sign of this changing. As a result, it is important that we have the right infrastructure and people in place to support this. This is good news for the many people who have sadly had their income affected and we are pleased to be able to support the UK economy with so many jobs at this time,” Lange said.

The company has more than 15,000 self-employed couriers across the UK. Now, it wants to invest £100 million in its expansion and has already opened 90 new sub depots in 2020.

Hermes has also refused cash from the UK government’s job retention bonus scheme, which was designed to help struggling firms. Under the scheme, the government will pay firms £1,000 for each furloughed worker they retain past January 2021.

Hermes says its hires for the new jobs would get holiday pay, following a deal with the GMB union in 2019. Already Hermes has received thousands of applications from pub staff, hairdressers, pilots, and others who were laid off since the beginning of lockdown according to Lange.
