Ride-hailing company Uber has informed drivers that it is increasing fare prices in Lagos across the board. In an email obtained by Techpoint Africa, the company said that the new pricing goes into effect on Monday, October 3, 2022.
“At Uber, we remain committed to providing a reliable earnings opportunity for drivers and are aware of changing economic conditions, including increased fuel cost,” the email read.
Going forward, Uber’s base fare will go from N340 to N450, while the minimum fare will increase from N600 to N650, and the charge per minute will be N16 (from its previous N14 pricing).
Uber users and drivers in African countries like Kenya and South Africa may not be surprised by the new price hike as the drivers in that region have been calling for it and even went on a 3-day strike to force the company’s hand.

Also, in London, the company increased fares by 5% in August 2022, as reported by Bloomberg. The change is also timely because the company was steadily losing drivers in its fare section to its food delivery arm.
“We are confident that these changes will have a positive impact on your earnings opportunity, and we will continue to work on initiatives which help in making Uber the app of choice for you,” the company’s email concluded.
The hike could also be Uber’s attempt to reconcile the subsidy it had put in place to grow exponentially as it has done in the past few years. Whatever the reason is, it is the end users that bear the brunt.
